Over the last decade, the incorporation of freight issues into the policy, planning, and programming activities of state departments of transportation (DOTs) and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) has received significant focus from federal transportation agencies, business and industry leaders, and the U.S. Congress.

At present, FAMPO does not have existing freight program or planning activities and there is no interaction to date with the private sector freight community; however, FAMPO plans to develop a Freight Plan in the upcoming 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).

This trends assessment focuses on Virginia’s freight movement patterns and modal usage, with an objective of answering important questions about where, what type, how much, and which modes are used to transport goods statewide, now and in the future over a 25- year horizon through 2040.
