Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program
The CMAQ Improvement Program is a federal aid highway program that provides funds for transportation projects or programs that will contribute to meeting the requirements of the Clean Air Act.
Eligible projects and programs must be included in a metropolitan planning organization’s current transportation plan and transportation improvement program, or in areas without an MPO, the current state transportation improvement program. CMAQ funds generally cannot be used for projects that result in the construction of new capacity available to single occupancy vehicles.
